Description
RFQ NB647050-16-04483, Surface Electropolisher/Electroetcher The National Institute of Standards and Technology's Applied Chemicals and Materials Division (ACMD) is involved in multiple research efforts aimed at quantifying the relationship between processing, microstructure, and material properties in various metallic materials. Specifically, these efforts include laser welding, metallic additive manufacturing, hydrogen assisted fatigue crack growth, and high strain rate testing, among others. Each of these efforts requires analysis of microstructures using optical and electron microscopy. Additionally, an electron microscopy technique called Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) allows for quantitative analysis of microstructural scale, metallic grain orientation, and localized elastic strain. Collecting high quality EBSD data requires precise polishing of material surfaces to remove all surface damage resulting from mechanical grinding/polishing operations. Observation of microstructure in the optical microscope requires etching of material surfaces such that features such as grain boundaries, precipitates, or other material imperfections become visible. Acquisition of an electropolishing/etching system is critical to both producing high quality data while simultaneously reducing staff time required to collect these data.
