- Description
- RFI FAB Lab Final NASA is issuing this RFI to gather information to help plan development of a multi-material fabrication laboratory for flight on ISS. Current logistics operations for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) systems, such as the International Space Station (ISS), rely on regular resupply missions from Earth. As NASA continues to advance human exploration beyond LEO, as mission durations increase up to the range of 2-3 years, there will need to be increasingly Earth-independent from a logistical standpoint. Consequently, in-space, on-demand manufacturing capabilities must be developed to support the unique challenges of long-duration human spaceflight, including fabrication and repair of components, consumables, tools and other structures. Finally, the ability to produce parts and components on-demand while in space has the potential to impact mission logistics (through payload mass reduction) and supportability (through risk reduction and increased ability to address unforeseen needs), as well as enable novel capabilities by taking advantage of the unique opportunities provided by in-space manufacturing. The mission of NASA's In-Space Manufacturing (ISM) project, under the Advanced Exploration Systems Division, is to identify, design, and implement on-demand, sustainable manufacturing solutions for fabrication, maintenance and repair during exploration missions. We seek to further ISM's mission by soliciting novel approaches and solutions to a wide variety of in-space manufacturing needs. The embodiment of this concept is a scale fabrication laboratory ("FabLab") that will eventually be implemented as a technology demonstration on the International Space Station (ISS). Responses to this RFI will assist NASA in developing a phased strategy of incrementally increasing capabilities to achieve this goal.
