Description
Lake Clark National Park and Preserve (LCNPP) requirement for: 1)a Phase I Archeological Identification Study; and 2) a National Register Determination of Eligibility Evaluation Study within an approximately 2.75 ac Area of Potential Effect (APE) on the north shore of Lake Clark, 4.75 miles across the lake north of Port Alsworth (Figures 1 and 2). As described in the National Park Service (NPS) Office of Policy, NPS-28, the purpose of the Archaeological Identification Study is to locate "archeological resources and describe their characteristics, potential scientific value, and threats to their integrity and condition" (NPS-28, Chapter 6). An Evaluation Study "assesses and documents the scientific value, integrity, condition, and National Register--eligibility of archeological resources and threats to them" (NPS-28, Chapter 6). This guideline will be implemented by the contractor within the APE. The purpose of this project is to determine if archeological resources are present within the area and, to the extent possible, evaluate the significance under Criterion D of the National Register of Historic Places of any deposits and/or features that might be discovered. Information collected during this project may provide new information concerning land use patterns within LCNPP. The information gathered from the studies will be used to assist the park in meeting its obligations under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended. Additionally, the park is finalizing a Cultural Landscape Inventory (CLI) for the parcel and will begin a Cultural Landscape Report (CLR) in 2017, and the data gathered from these studies will inform the CLR. In order to accomplish this goal, fieldwork consisting of the excavation of up to 200 shovel test pits (STPs); the excavation of test units equaling six (6) square meters; cataloguing approximately 500 artifacts; and project reporting, documentation and curation activities will be required.
