Description
SBA 8(a) Approval #0885/16/607217/01: LOST TRAIL STREAM AND WETLAND RESTORATION PROJECT The Lost Trail National Wildlife Refuge is located in the West Central portion of Flathead County, Montana. Encompassing 9,225 acres, the Refuge was established as the 519th Refuge in the National Wildlife Refuge System managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). Prior to establishment of the Refuge, lands were used primarily for cropland, livestock grazing, and agriculture. The historical land use practices significantly altered wetland and aquatic resources within the Refuge. Wetlands have been impacted by water impoundments, irrigation diversions, wetland drains, and infrastructure including the Great Northern Railroad and Pleasant Valley Road. Pleasant Valley Creek was straightened and channelized, lowering the groundwater table and resulting in loss of wetlands hydrology. Construction work associated with this STREAM AND WETLAND RESTORATION PROJECT will follow the plan drawings and specifications developed by River Design Group and approved by the NRCS and USFWS. The design is based on the USFWS Comprehensive Conservation Plan (CCP) which presented the following recommendations: 1) restoration of native vegetation, 2) restoration of the natural wetland hydrology surrounding Dahl Lake and Pleasant Valley Creek, and 3) control of invasive plants. Channel sinuosity and riffle/pool/run/glide sequences will be restored in a 5.7-mile reach of Pleasant Valley Creek. Historical floodplan surfaces will be re-connected to the stream by reducing the channel grade. Rock and woody structures will be incorporated into the channel to enhance channel stability and wildlife habitat. Approximately 47,000 lineal feet of drainage ditches, irrigation ditches, roadside ditches and abandoned stream channel will be earth-filled and seeded. These actions will result in a net increase of 222 acres of wetland habitat on the Refuge, mostly consisting of emergent and scrub-shrub wetland types. To support this project, approximately 3.0 miles of existing county road has been relocated under a separate Federal Highway Administration contract.
