- Synopsis Description of service(s) required to meet the Agency's needs: The US Department of Energy is planning for the development of transportation capabilities to facilitate the government's acceptance of used nuclear fuel at one or more storage facilities, as directed in the Administration's Strategy for the Management and Disposal of Used Nuclear Fuel and High-Level Radioactive Waste. Due to the size and weight of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) packages, the Department is planning to use commercial rail carriers for the transport of SNF. To date, the US Government has established agreements with two commercial railroad carriers, securing reasonable rates for Government transport of SNF and high-level waste. The Government is proceeding to negotiate similar agreements with all major railroad carriers applicable to SNF shipments.
