- Description
- This is modification 2 to the synopsis entitled Bellows for Use in Pressurized Components and Lines Where Leakage Is Catastrophic Solicitation NNJ17ZBH003L. Which was posted on November 15, 2016 you are notified that the following changes are made: As NASA's missions take humans farther from Earth, the reliability of space craft must improve. One area that NASA is attempting improve reliability is in the area of thin walled pressure members (such as bellows). These thin members are not readily analyzed for life using standard fracture control methods. They cannot be inspected with traditional Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) methods to determine initial flaw sizes and the NASGRO software is not valid for these thin ductile boundaries. So historically the life of bellows have been determined solely based on conservative design margins, vendor empirical data, and maintaining strict process controls. Components where single fault failures can lead to loss of mission and/or crew (CRIT 1), these historical methods have been brought into question. NASA wishes to establish methods to improve the life prediction of these component and thus reduce the risk of failures. To be clear, these are presented as recommendations. However, should a NASA project decide to implement these, they will be passed down to the prime and flowed to the component vendors as requirements. Therefore, these may well become requirements for future CRIT 1 components. This RFI seeks input from vendors on the impacts, technical feasibility, and benefits gained from these recommendations. NASA is NOT currently pursuing a purchase of bellows based on these recommendations. This is only intended as a forum to provide an exchange of technical ideas between NASA and our aerospace vendor base. NASA/JSC plans to conduct a Teleconference communication to discuss best practices while working with bellows. JSC is hereby soliciting firms to RSVP for this Teleconference. Please RSVP by December 14 2016, by 10:30 am (CDT) to Carlos Roman carlos.roman@nasa.gov and reference NNJ17ZBH003L. Comments may be forwarded to Carlos Roman carlos.roman@nasa.gov and Chrystal Wiseman chrystal.d.wiseman@nasa.gov via electronic transmission. The due date for responses is not extended. Documents related to this procurement will be available over the Internet. These documents will reside on a World Wide Web (WWW) server, which may be accessed using a WWW browser application. Potential offerors are responsible for downloading their own copy of the solicitation and amendments (if any).
