- Description
- Sources Sought 438169 - Inventory Management System for Hazardous Chemical Labeling The National Institute on Aging (NIA), one of the 27 Institutes and Centers of NIH, leads a broad scientific effort to understand the nature of aging and to extend the healthy, active years of life. The Intramural Research Program (IRP) of the National Institute on Aging (NIA) provides a stimulating setting for a comprehensive effort to understand aging through multidisciplinary investigator-initiated research, in this regard. NIA must be in compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) regulations regarding employees' rights to know about work-related hazards in the workplace. Compliance with OSHA regulations is essential to ongoing laboratory operations at the NIA/IRP. NIA/IRP will be in violation of OSHA regulations if access to SDS information is not provided. Chemical manufacturers are mandated to ship an updated Safety Data Sheet (SDS) with every chemical, and/or provide upon request. The hard copy of the SDS is maintained in the immediate work area. Furthermore, SDS must be readily available, even to employees who do not have access to the hard copies and to employees whose first language is not English. Additionally per new OSHA regulations passed in 2012, NIA must be in compliance with the Global Harmonization System and within OSHA's determined timeframes. Part of this new system includes new chemical hazardous labeling pictograms that are globally recognized. Per OSHA, all chemicals must be labeled with the new pictograms by OSHA's deadline of June 1, 2015.
