- Description
- Source Pre-Qualification Requirements (REPAIR) Pre-Award REPAIR Source Qualification Requirements: AMSC C: These parts require engineering source approval by the control activity to assure the integrity of the part. Alternative sources must pre-qualify by submitting a Source Approval Request (SAR) according to the design control activity's procedures and receive approval from the applicable government engineering activity, AFMC WLSE (C-5 Galaxy Division Engineering). Stock Number (NSN) Part Number Vendor P/N Nomenclature 1650-00-450-4819 4H90007-113A 953004-5-1 C-5 Ram Air Turbopump The C-5 Ram Air Turbopump (RAT) is used to provide pressure to the No. 2 hydraulic system for flight control use in the event of an in flight emergency such as a multiple engine failure. The RAT, which is located in the forward portion of the left main landing gear pod, consists of a pressure pump and a six-bladed turbine which drives a fixed displacement hydraulic pump. The RAT is critical to the emergency operation of the No. 2 hydraulic system. C-5 RAT repair requires strict control of processes to ensure adherence to quality control and testing requirements. Special tooling is required for the repair capability, and special equipment is required for testing of the RAT once it has been repaired. Consistent repair processes are needed to ensure that the RAT is repaired and will be operable in the event of a critical in flight emergency. Failure of the C-5 RAT would place the aircraft and crew in an extremely hazardous situation due to loss of hydraulic pressure which will cause loss of flight control operation. Flight safety histories indicate that aircrew task saturation as a result of component failures dramatically increases the risk of an aircraft mishap if they occur in critical phases of flight. If this failure occurs under these conditions there is a risk of loss of life and/or aircraft.
