- Description
- Small Business Sources Sought notice for Automated Tape Collecting Ultramicrotome System (Large) The mission of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) is to seek fundamental knowledge about the brain and nervous system and to use that knowledge to reduce the burden of neurological disease. To support this mission, NINDS supports and performs basic, translational, and clinical neuroscience research through grants-in-aid, contracts, scientific meetings, and through research in its own laboratories, and clinics. To advance the NINDS mission, the Laboratory of Neurobiology cuts and employs serial sections for Electronic Microscopy to analyze synaptic arrangements in the brain. Serial Sections are photographed section by section in transmission mode. In the last ten years there has been an explosion of interest in understanding brain circuits by analyzing connections. The ATLEMtome Complete System is a novel device for cutting and collect extensive series of sections for electron microscopy (EM) in the backscatter mode where data can be collected automatically. This device produces the series of sections on silicon wafer for this purpose. A brand name or equal ATLEMtome Complete System is required not only to accomplish the connectomics process, but to combine a sufficient number of sections with resolution of cell biological centered on synaptic structure. Specifically NINDS requires to following: 1. One (1) a ATLEMtome Complete System [Boeckeler Instruments Item No.: 75841Z, ATUM500, 60617-AR, 60619, 74802, 74800, RT4-M35, 60621, MICS] or equal with the following: a. A desktop machine with dimensions that does not exceed 40'W x 36"D x 54"H and 110-240 VAC (input)/255 watts (output) b. The ability to cut long series of noise free sections of tissue embedded in acrylic and epoxy resins blocks and produce continuous ribbons of sections 50-70 nm thick c. Include a continuous feeding tape controlled by PC software so that section continuously and automatically flow off the block face to become attached to the ribbon. Sections should stay flat, free of wrinkles on the ribbon d. Include a conventional 4 mm diamond knife able to operate at 35 degrees. The knife must have the ability able continuously cut up to 1000 useable cut sections of tissue to be mounted on a feeding tape. The tape must interface with the knife to allow the sections to adhere wrinkle free to the tape as sections come off the edge of the knife e. A silent air compressor, anti-static device, chair, water level control system, wafer wash station, 4' diameter silicon wafers, climate chamber, feeding tape, and an anti-vibration microtome table. The tape head will have x-y-z head positioners to adjust position feeding tape during sectioning. No other computer is required. Anticipated period of performance: 60 days ARO
