Description
UT-Battelle, LLC, acting under its Prime Contract No. DE-AC05-00OR22725 with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for the management and operation of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), is seeking commercialization partners for its deterministic single-photon source based on spectral shift of a heralded photon technology. The invention relates to quantum communication and more specifically to the development of a deterministic source emitting a single photon of a given frequency and polarization on demand. We solve this fundamental problem with a deterministic single-photon source using a nondeterministic photon-pair source. Like previous attempts, our approach multiplexes many probabilistic sources and uses detection of one photon to "herald" the existence of the other. However, past attempts that have relied on a variable time or spatial mode memory have proven to be impractical due to an overdependence on strict requirements for low-noise, low-loss, high-speed switching technology to physically move the "found" photon into a desired mode. Our method achieves single-photon emission without passing the photon through high-loss switches. License applications will be evaluated based on prospective partners' ability and commitment to successfully commercialize the technology, with a preference for United States-based businesses and small businesses. For additional information and license application, contact Eugene Cochran, Commercialization Manager, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, cochraner@ornl.gov, 865-576-2830. ORNL 201603700.
