Description
The U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) - the U.S. Government initiative to help save the lives of those impacted by HIV/AIDS around the world - is the largest commitment by any nation in history to combat a single disease internationally. PEPFAR investments also help alleviate suffering from other diseases across the global health spectrum. PEPFAR is driven by a shared responsibility among donor and partner nations and others to make smart investments to save lives. Thanks in large part to U.S. leadership, tremendous progress has been made in the fight against global AIDS. PEPFAR has supported life-saving antiretroviral treatment for more than 7 million men, women and children worldwide as of September 30, 2013. PEPFAR supported HIV testing and counseling for more than 74.3 million people in FY 2016, providing a critical entry point to prevention, treatment, and care. In addition, life-saving antiretroviral treatment (ART) for nearly 11.5 million adults and 1.1 million children, were provided through PEPFAR assistance in Fiscal Year (FY) 2016. PEPFAR provided antiretroviral medications to prevent mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of the virus. Due to this PEPFAR support, nearly 2 million babies were born HIV-free. By September 30, 2016, PEPFAR had also supported more than 11.7 million voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) procedures in east and southern Africa. Now in its third phase, PEPFAR is continuing to focus on the transition from an emergency response to building sustainable programs. These programs are country-owned and country-driven and address HIV/AIDS with a broader context of health and development. PEPFAR's program builds on past strengths and increases efficiencies by scaling up effective interventions and ensuring value.
