This is accomplished, in part, by maintaining a system of range marks for referencing the international boundary through Passamaquoddy Bay, Maine-New Brunswick. Maintaining the system in an effective state requires the range marks be painted periodically and the removal of any brush and trees that obstruct the line of sight between the pairs of range marks and between the range marks and the boundary turning point on the water that they reference.
