Description
This contract is for the purchase of a new controlled-atmosphere muffle furnace at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) Shock Physics Laboratory. This system will be used to dry and anneal metals at low temperatures (typically 50-300 C, occasionally higher) in an inert environment such as nitrogen or argon gas. Annealing in air is not suitable for these materials, as they will begin to oxidize slightly during extending drying periods, altering their mechanical properties. This furnace will be used in several NPS lab classes, including PH4857, Terminal Ballistics and Shock Physics, and PC3800, Survey of the Effects of Weapons , in student thesis work, and also in reimbursable research conducted by multiple groups in Physics and Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering. In its typical operation, this furnace is pumped into a rough vacuum with an external pump, and the heating chamber is then filled with an inert gas from a standard supply cylinder. The sample is then heated for the desired duration. Due to the odd geometry of several samples, NPS requires a box-shaped muffle furnace for this operation rather than a standard tube furnace. This muffle furnace must make a strong seal to prevent any oxygen contamination during the heating process. See attached RFQ document and minimum technical requirements.
