- Description
- Sole Source The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is interested in developing new coatings technologies for nuclear thermal propulsion fuel rods to solve the mid-band corrosion problem. The objectives of this work are to develop and optimize process parameters for depositing ZrC coatings on graphite substrates. The process parameters to be studied will include the effects of gas pressure, gas temperature, gas mixture ratios and deposition times on coating composition, morphology and thickness although other processing factors may be considered after consultation between GRC and the vendor, if necessary. The vendor will work closely with Glenn Research Center (GRC) personnel in achieving the objectives of this contract. The scope of the contract includes the optimization of coating deposition processes and methodology. The coatings will be deposited by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on graphite specimens supplied by GRC. Processing conditions for coating deposition shall be optimized and documented in a final written formal report that shall be submitted to GRC at the end of the contract. The coated specimens will be examined at GRC and the results will be conveyed to the vendor as part of the process development and optimization studies. Detailed microstructural work on the coated specimens will be conducted at GRC. High heat flux thermal cycling testing may be conducted on coated specimens if the coatings are microstructurally suitable for testing. It is understood that all work, including intellectual property, processing data and procedures developed under this contract shall be the property of the U.S. Government. Statement of Work 1. Desired coating composition: The desired nominal composition of the coatings to be deposited by the vendor shall be as close to stoichiometric ZrC (Zr-10.3(wt.%) C) as possible. 2. Substrates: All coatings will be deposited by CVD deposition techniques on Government provided high purity graphite disks 25 mm dia. x 3.1 mm thick. 3. Process conditions: The ZrC coatings will be deposited under different CVD deposition conditions after consultation with GRC. 4. The vendor shall optimize processing conditions for coating the high purity graphite substrates by CVD. It is understood that microstructural examination and other evaluation will be conducted at the NASA Glenn Research Center for an independent verification. NASA Glenn Research Center reserves the right to exercise each option. 5. Number of disks to be coated per process conditions: 3 (min.) 6. Number of processing trials: 3 to 5. Deliverables and delivery dates: 1. Deliver tasks on or prior to the date indicated for each task. 2. Oral and informal written reports (e.g. e-mails) shall be provided on an as-needed basis to enable the COTR to monitor progress on this contract. 3. The contract shall document details of process conditions, photographs and micrographs during the course of the development work and discuss both positive and negative outcomes of the process optimization techniques. This information shall be included in the final report submitted to NASA Glenn Research Center at the end of the contract.
