- Description
- DESCRIPTION OF WORK: The Structure 69 (S-69) Weir will serve as the downstream terminus of the Canal 38 (C-38) backfill maximizing the amount of wetlands to be re-hydrated in the Kissimmee River Basin. The weir system will dissipate the energy of flood flows transitioning from the restored Kissimmee River floodplain to the remnant C-38 channel. The scope of work for this project includes complete backfilling of approximately 2600 linear feet of the C-38 canal from the weir location north to the historic river channel crossing. The fill material will come from the spoil disposal area established at the time of the initial canal construction. The existing spoil and stockpile area is located adjacent to the project area, along the west side of the C-38 canal. The inverted u-shaped weir being constructed at the terminus of the C-38 backfill will be approximately 2560 linear feet, with a crest elevation of 29.8 feet NAVD88 (31 feet NGVD29). The weir crest width is 21 inches. The weir will be sheet pile construction with a concrete cap. A 16 foot wide concrete access road will be provided on the interior of the u-shaped weir. Earthen levees will be constructed on both sides of the remnant C-38 channel to connect the u-shaped weir to the existing CSX protection levee and embankment. The east tieback levee will be approximately 1200 linear feet and the west tieback levee will be approximately 800 linear feet, both with a 14 feet wide crest. Access will be provided by utilizing the backfill and overbank areas down and upstream of the proposed weir to construct an access road. The access road will also function as apron/energy dissipation feature/armoring for the weir. The historic Kissimmee River channel will function as the main conduit for flow during the construction period. The project includes all work incidental to the construction of the aforementioned features and will have an estimated period of performance of 600 calendar days plus 90 days for grass establishment.
