- Request for Information for Modified Transient Plane Source Testing of Pavement Core Samples 1. A research effort to better interpret thermal imagery of airfields to determine pavement properties related to structural capacity is underway. Thermal models are being developed to interpret the thermal response of airfield pavements. As part of this research, measurement of the thermal properties (heat capacity, conductivity, and diffusivity) of asphalt pavement is needed. 2. The Modified Transient Plane Source (MTPS) technique does not require the specimens to be sawcut prior to testing. Specifications for testing are cylindrical samples 2-3 inches height by 6 in. diameter. Specifications are: 3. Specification for Testing and reporting. • Minimal modification to the specimens to be tested (no sawcutting of the specimens). Surface preparation and may be necessary if the surface is too rough for measurement. • Testing temperatures from -20 to 60°C in 10°C increments, • Raw and summary data in Microsoft EXCEL • A summary report will be provided in Microsoft WORD detailing the testing procedure with heat capacity (W/(m·K)), Diffusivity (mm²/s) and thermal conductivity (MJ/(m³·K)) tables at each temperature for each sample. 4. Interested parties should respond to this request for information with details describing the details of the testing system, the sample preparation regimen (if any), and report preparation with data delivery details.
