Description of Services: Provide state-of-the-art education in geriatrics and gerontology to 50 VA staff clinicians who are working in primary care in an intensive course that has been accredited for at least 30 hours of accredited continuing medical education. Background: The VA Geriatric Scholars Program is a national, high visibility workforce development educational program to improve primary care services to older Veterans, particularly in the rural VA Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC). The program is funded by the VA Offices of Rural Health (ORH) and the VA Office of Geriatrics and Extended Care (GEC); the program hubsite is at the GLA Geriatric Research Education Clinical Center (GRECC), which delivers the education in collaboration with nine other GRECCs. Since its inception as a pilot program in 2008, the program has provided longitudinal educational experiences to over 500 VA employees working across all Veterans Integrated Service Networks (VISNs), at over 300 VA facilities, and affecting a conservatively estimated over 250,000 Veterans. A mandatory component of the Geriatric Scholars Program is attendance at an intensive course in geriatrics; in addition, alumni of the Geriatric Scholars Program may select an elective option to attend a refresher intensive course in geriatrics to maintain knowledge and skills in state of the art care. The VA Geriatric Scholars Program offers participants the option of selecting among 4 courses for the mandatory component: University of California, Mt. Sinai School of Medicine, University of Wisconsin and Harvard University. The courses are specified in the successful grant application; the courses are similar although there are some slight variations among the courses, including dates, locations and special topics. The Contractor will provide the course with a dedicated social work curriculum for VA employees. The availability of these courses and the overall program is announced by the VA Deputy Undersecretary for Health and Operations Management (DUSHOM) to the Network Directors who may nominate at least 6 clinicians per VISN to attend the program. We require expertise and specialized knowledge in geriatrics and gerontology that is only available at external academic centers of excellence that serve as one of the few national educational activities that provide intensive education and board review in geriatrics and gerontology. Funding is provided by a grant from the VA Office of Rural Health.
