Description
Capability Statement Statement of Work for Procurement of HgTe X-ray Absorbers for the XARM/Resolve Calorimeter Array HgTe x-ray absorber tiles are needed for the Resolve instrument for the flight calorimeter array. This contract procures tiles of the characteristics specified in a quantity sufficient for lot evaluation, visual screening, assembly of this array, and spares. Tiles are to be delivered ready to use, with Goddard personnel needing only to perform lot evaluation and the attachment to the thermistor arrays. The requirements for the deliverables are as follows. 1) Quantity and Schedule: a) EPIR shall deliver at least 60 absorber tiles that meet the specifications established in the following sections, 22 weeks after establishment of the contract. 2) Composition: a) The composition of the absorbers shall be single crystal HgTe, grown by MBE on a bulk CdZnTe substrate. b) The HgTe source material, while still a continuous film on a CdZnTe substrate, will be annealed in a saturated Hg vapor at 250° C for 24 hours c) The HgTe shall be delineated into individual absorber tiles by dry etching. The CdZnTe substrate shall be completely removed from the tiles using a selective wet etch. d) The absorber tiles shall be cleaned of wax, photoresist, and any other chemicals used in their processing. 3) Size and labeling: a) The lateral dimensions of the delivered absorber tiles shall be 0.814 mm ± 0.004 mm. These dimensions shall be checked on representative tiles from each lot. If the top and bottom faces are not the same size (because the side walls of the tiles are not perpendicular to the faces), the requirements on lateral dimension shall apply to the wider face. b) The thickness of the delivered absorbers shall be 0.0085 mm ± 0.0005 mm. c) If, while refining the delineation process, tiles are produced that do not comply with the size requirements but are otherwise suitable material, they shall be delivered to NASA to allow early evaluation of the low-temperature properties of the material. d) Each absorber from a particular growth run shall be given a unique number that shall be etched into the surface of the absorber. The depth of the etching shall not exceed 0.001 mm. e) The absorber tiles should lie flat. Any warping introduced in handling shall introduce an out-of-plane deviation of < 0.005 mm. 4) Characterizations: a) X-ray diffraction rocking curve maps shall be made of the source HgTe subsequent to annealing for reference. Delivered tiles must be from regions with rocking-curve widths < 120 arc-sec. b) The density of voids (scale > 0.002 mm) and micro-defects (scale < 0.002 mm) shall be determined by visual inspection. The density of voids shall be < 2000/cm2, and the density of micro-defects shall be < 4x105/cm2. 5) Packaging and Shipment a) Absorber tiles shall be placed in separate cells in a 2-inch x 2-inch waffle pack. A cloth insert shall be included in each waffle pack to keep the tiles from moving out of their cells. b) Tiles from separately grown films and/or delineated in different lots should be packaged separately, and their packages labeled by film ID (and batch ID when there is more than one delineation batch per film). NASA prefers that all 60 tiles come from a single growth lot. c) The waffle packs shall be placed in clean plastic zipper bags for shipment and packed in foam in sturdy boxes. d) Supplier shall provide the following certifications: i) Certification of Conformance ii) Materials Certification (including chemical and physical analysis). iii) Dimensional Inspection Report. iv) Data sheets from the growth, processing, and characterization of the tiles. e) The Dimensional Inspection Report shall be provided prior to shipment for NASA review. 6) Options a) NASA has the option to place orders for additional lots of HgTe absorbers under this contract, over a period of 2 years from the start of the contract. The anticipated number of tiles in each such additional call is 60 absorbers. The anticipated specifications are identical, except that the size needed for the tiles will be specified at the time of the order. (Neither the thickness nor the area requested for any optional additional order will be larger than the values specified in the main order.) b) If the need for an additional order is the result of poor low-temperature performance of the absorber tiles, EPIR will work with NASA to resolve the discrepancy from prior absorber samples before filling the additional order.
