- Description
- Researchers at the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) have developed a method of combining the reversible formation of alloys at high temperature with the reversible formation of hydrides to store quality thermal heat. Background This invention makes use of the formation of alloys at high temperature that occur when a hydride system is dehydrogenated at high temperatures. The formation of alloys, when dehydrogenations occur at high temperatures was considered to be a reversibility problem because of the need of high temperatures. This invention solves several problems that arise when dual metal hydride systems are used to store heat. Several hydrides are well suited to used to store heat but they suffer from being corrosive and not able to generate enough pressure to hydrogenate low enthalpy hydride in the other side of the system. A Better Alternative This invention is intended to solve many problems that accompany the use of hydrides to store thermal energy, using a modified class of materials to meet performance and cost. Although alteration of enthalpy is known to researchers to occur when elements and metals are combined in hydrogenation and dehydrogenation reactions the invention is not only intended at altering the enthalpy to store heat at pressure and temperature required but also to prevent corrosion and the evaporation of some metals when used at high temperature necessary for high efficiency. This allows use of lesser expensive materials for the low enthalpy hydrides. Stage of Development A patent has been applied for from the U. S. Patent and Trademark Office. Partnering Opportunities SRNS invites interested companies with proven capabilities in this area of expertise to develop commercial applications for this process under a cooperative research and development agreement(CRADA) or licensing agreement. Companies interested in licensing will be requested to submit a business plan setting forth company qualifications, strategies, activities, and milestones for commercializing this invention. Qualifications should include past experience at bringing similar products to market, reasonable schedule for product launch, sufficient manufacturing capacity, established distribution networks, and evidence of sufficient financial resources for product development and launch. Technology Transfer The Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) is the U. S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) applied research and development laboratory at the Savannah River Site (SRS). With its wide spectrum of expertise in areas such as homeland security, hydrogen technology, materials, sensors, and environmental science, SRNL’s cutting edge technology delivers high dividends to its customers. The management and operating contractor for SRS and SRNL is Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, LLC. SRNS is responsible for transferring its technologies to the private sector so that these technologies may have the collateral benefit of enhancing U.S. economic competitiveness.
