- Description
- The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Johnson Space Center (JSC)is seeking to expand their unique human habitation concepts suitable for NASA's Deep-Space Missions, including Lunar and Mars surface habitats. Future space crews will need to co-exist with each other and perform a wide variety of challenging operations in a relatively low-volume habitat for months or years at a time. As a result, NASA intends to maximize efficiencies in the construction with flexibility to reconfigure, repurpose, or utilize a space for multiple functions of the habitat. The goal is to maximize crew performance, while maintaining crew privacy provisions; two goals that are essential elements of future spacecraft habitat designs. Activity envisioned for this effort involves the evaluation of human habitation concepts, vehicular internal layouts, equipment usage, materials selection, and manufacturing techniques needed to expand NASA's deep-space habitation concepts. The human occupancy concept areas to be explored may include: Command & Control, Communications, Crew Quarters, Environmental Protection, Exercise, Extravehicular Activity (EVA) & other event staging, Galley, Hygiene, Lighting, Maintenance, Medical, Research, Storage, Structural (secondary & outfitting needed for Avionics, Environmental Control, & Life Support, Experiments, Thermal, etc.), Utilities & Fluids Distribution, Ventilation, and Waste Management. Under this activity, NASA seeks unique ideas, knowledge sharing, Co-Development opportunities, or potential partnership arrangements. Partners can potentially benefit from NASA's unique capabilities, technology advancements, and range of expertise. In addition, new Intellectual Property (IP) may be created through a collaboration that would enable the partner to commercialize the technology for other applications such home and industrial furnishings, including the marine / maritime industry or, perhaps Department of Defense. R&D Status: Although habitation provisioning has improved since the early single-person missions to space in the 1960s, there are still considerable challenges in this area from what is currently being applied on the International Space Station to what will actually be applied for NASA Deep-Space Missions. As a result, only limited progress has been made in this area. It is recognized that any advancements to this technology area will be an iterative effort due to the mere nature of having humans in the loop and will be driven, significantly, by the eventual program requirements and mission goals set forth by the NASA Deep-Space Program. This announcement is not to be construed as a Request for Proposal and is not a commitment by the government, nor will the government pay for any information provided. Since this is an Announcement, no evaluation letters or results will be issued to the respondents. Please submit a Statement of Interest Form, https://nasajsc.secure.force.com/StatementofInterest.
