Description
Notice of Intent No. FBO 353-17 High Performance Computing for Materials This Notice of Intent is to provide potential applicants advance notice that the Office of Fossil Energy and the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) intend to sponsor a solicitation entitled "High Performance Computing for Materials." Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) will announce the opportunity on behalf of the Clean Coal and Carbon Management Program, the Advanced Manufacturing Office (AMO) and the Vehicle Technology Office. The High Performance Computing Program for Materials (HPC4Mtls) will make up to $1,000,000 to $3,000,000 dollars available to national laboratories to work with qualified industry partners. The HPC4Mtls program will utilize the world-class computational resources and assets of the DOE National Laboratories to work with US based industry and companies to perform higher fidelity simulations to enable enhanced products or processes; add models for missing physical phenomena to enable more realistic simulations; develop more complex models to capture interactions between physical phenomena; provide expertise in computational fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, kinetics, materials modeling, additive manufacture and other material focused problems faced by industry. An area of emphasis for the program is materials at extreme conditions, including extreme pressure, temperature, chemical environment, vibration, fatigue or stress states. A workshop to explain the program and to engage US based companies, universities, and government stakeholders was held on October 12, 2017 at the Omni William Penn Hotel in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Presentations from the workshop are posted on the HPC4Mtls Events webpage. A follow-up HPC4Materials Workshop webinar is scheduled for November 8, 2017 at 2:30 p.m. EST. The webinar will consist of an introduction to the HPC4Materials Program. To register for the webinar click here. This program is synergistic with the HPC4Manufacturing program and focuses specifically on materials challenges. The principal laboratories are LLNL (lead), NETL, LANL, and ORNL, although all DOE national labs are eligible to participate. The program funds up to $300,000 to a national lab team for industry access to HPC resources and expertise. Industry pays at least twenty percent (20%) of project costs (cash or in-kind). All associated material (presentations, notes, participant list, and questions & answers) are located at the HPC4Mtls website. This Notice of Intent serves to make interested parties aware of the LLNL's intention to issue a solicitation in the near term. All information contained in this Notice of Intent is subject to change. LLNL will not respond to questions concerning this Notice of Intent. Once the solicitation has been released, LLNL will provide an avenue for potential applicants to submit questions. LLNL plans to issue the solicitation via the FedBizOPs website. Applicants wishing to receive official notifications and information from LLNL regarding this solicitation should register at the HPC4Mtls website. THIS IS A NOTICE OF INTENT ONLY. The funding sponsor may issue a solicitation as described herein, may issue a solicitation that is significantly different than the solicitation described herein, or may not issue a solicitation at all.
