This equipment is currently in use at the Carl T. Hayden Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona. Background: Phoenix Veterans Health Administration (VHA) requires services for the maintenance of one (1) Perkin Elmer Liquid Scintillation Analyzer Model Tri-Carb 3110TR (s/n: DG10129761) being used within the Research Program of the Phoenix VA Health Care System (PVAHCS). The Perkin Elmer Liquid Scintillation Analyzer Model Tri-Carb 3110TR is used to detect alpha, beta and gamma radioactivity in samples from experiments with cells and tissues. It is also used to detect radioactivity from swipes of the research laboratory areas used for the experiments. This will detect any spills and ensures the safety of staff members conducting research activities. The Perkin Elmer Liquid Scintillation Analyzer Model Tri-Carb 3110TR measures light emitted from samples mixed with scintillation cocktail solution. Samples are placed into vials; a scintillation cocktail is added and the vials are then placed into the machine. The machine takes the vials down into the machine and radiation emitting from the sample makes the crystals light up. The more they light up, the more radiation a sample is emitting. The light energy is usually converted into electric energy via a photomultiplier to give a meaningful measure. This is a highly specialized and sophisticated computer controlled machine, requiring specialized training and knowledge to diagnose and fix any problems that occur. Breakdowns of the machine can also be minimized with the performance of preventative maintenance visits which should be included in the service contract. Only Perkin Elmer Certified Technicians can service and repair the Perkin Elmer Liquid Scintillation Analyzer Model Tri-Carb 3110TR as the system is proprietary in nature.
