Description
HQ USSOCOM SOF AT&L PEO-ROTARY WING (RW)/INDUSTRY COLLABORATION EVENT FOCUSED ON AVIATION MAINTENANCE MODERNIZATION 1. TIME AND PLACE The Government/Industry Collaboration Event will be held Wednesday - Thursday, 20-21 June 2018 at SOFWERX, Tampa FL. 2. WHY ARE WE DOING THIS? SOCOM Aviation maintenance leaders have seen recent examples of industry trends in applying virtual reality/augmented reality/on-demand video technology to the aviation operational maintenance process. These technologies promise to increase efficiency and effectiveness of unit maintenance personnel over current aviation maintenance practices. 3. WHAT ARE WE TRYING TO ACCOMPLISH? PEO-RW, in conjunction with the US Army Special Operations Aviation Command (USASOAC), Aviation Maintenance Support Office (AMSO), and the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment-Airborne (160th SOAR-A) will assemble technical experts from SOF aviation maintainers and industry to explore the use of technology to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of current aircraft maintenance processes. Those processes currently make use of either paper manuals or digitized paper manuals on laptops, often requiring print-out of task-specific instructions and diagrams to take to the aircraft. PEO-RW is looking for Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to collaborate with active duty maintainers during a Capability Collaboration Event (CCE) on 20-21 June. The outcome from the CCE will be used to formulate specific calls to industry, academic & laboratory partners for the potential tools, techniques, and technologies that will be assessed during a September Capability Assessment Event (CAE). Topics that will be included for discussion during this CCE include: • Industry trends in use of technology to improve aircraft maintenance operations, including but not limited to: o Visual depiction of data/energy flow ("tracing wires") and mechanical operations o "Manipulatable" 3D images and diagrams of components and/or systems o Use of virtual reality/augmented reality/video tools to enhance the maintainer's understanding of maintenance procedures o Aids to trouble-shooting o Automated video capture of critical task performance for quality control purposes • Identify challenges of implementation (i.e. cost drivers or areas of risk) and any on-going/planned efforts to overcome these challenges: o Quantifying the benefits/cost saving from utilizing modern maintenance tools 4. HOW WILL THE COLLABORATION EVENT BE CONDUCTED? The capability collaboration event will be conducted through a series of breakout sessions using the design thinking process. PEO-RW, Maintainers, and SMEs will collaborate to identify the current challenges, how to most effectively overcome them, and to identify the most appropriate tools, techniques, and technologies that will inform a future collaboration assessment event in September. The format will look much like the following: 20 June: 0800 - Start, 1700 - Day 1 Complete 21 June: 0800 - Start, 1500 - Day 2 Complete Participation will be by invitation only. The targeted participating audience is the technical and/or practice leaders from industry, academia, and laboratories that have demonstrated expertise in the areas of interest. Subject Matter Experts must complete a "Request to Attend" and include their CV, which should contain relevant work history. All information should be submitted to www.sofwerx.org/aviation by Monday, 4 May 2018. The government team will review the submissions and select SMEs to attend the event. Invitations will be sent to the selected SMEs NLT Monday, 10 May 2018. Please direct technical related questions to Mr. Mike Rollman, email: michael.rollman@socom.mil phone: (813) 826-1973. Please direct event related questions to Tara Parker, email: tara.parker@sofwerx.org phone: (813) 693.5599 ext. 115
