Ann Arbor, MI 48105-2303, 506-18-3-118-0170 Brief Description of Supplies/ Services required and the intended use/Estimated Amount: Histostar Embedding Center with Cold Plate Thermo Scientific offers a Tissue Embedding System that is ergonomic and efficient. This equipment will be utilized by the Histology Department of the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System, located in room E305. The Tissue Embedding Systems performs the following functions: allows the Histology Technician to precisely embed surgical pathology and cytology specimens in hot paraffin wax. Subsequent cooling on the cold plate allows blocks to chill at controlled temperature. A large, illuminated work surface allows biopsy bags to be opened and contents extracted without loss of specimen. Tissue specimen as small as 1 mm require specific orientation for diagnosis. Precise embedding is pivotal in the diagnostic process in Anatomic Pathology. Unique characteristics that limit availability to only one source, with the reason no other supplies or services can be used: The Thermo Histostar Embedding Center incorporates two separate components; the cold plate and heated embedding module. The components offer flexibility of workflow, high productivity and large work surface. Tissue cassette storage area is very large. There is not a larger tissue storage embedding station on the market. The tissue storage tank will accommodate up to four baskets of processed tissue. This pivotal to lean workflow, allowing the technician to select which cassettes to embed based on urgency. The large tissue storage area also mitigates cellular damage due to specimens drying out after the processor wax has been drained. The importance of a large tissue storage area cannot be overstated. The stationary LED lighting for the workspace has adjustable light intensity and casts light without shadow. Adjustable light sources have been proven to case shadow on specimens, thus limiting vision. This unit also has the largest heated open work surface for staging specimens and retrieving biopsy specimens submitted in biopsy bags. The LED control panel offers ease of programing and constant monitoring of critical temperatures. Description of market research conducted and results or statement why it was not conducted: Histostar Embedding Center with Cold Plate I have researched three embedding centers; Electron Microscopy Sciences Tissue Embedding Center, Sakura Finetek Tissue Tek TEC 5 Tissue Embedding Console System, and the Thermo Scientific Histostar Embedding Center with Cold Plate. The Sakura unit has a movable light source and both the Electron Microscopy and Thermo unit have stationary LED lighting. Stationary LED lighting is highly preferred as it does not cast shadows on the work surface, making it very difficult to see small specimens (less than 1 mm). The Thermo unit has highly desired advantage of providing the largest heated tissue storage tank. The Thermo unit also has the highly desire advantage of providing the largest cold plate. The large tissue storage and cold plate contribute to an efficient workflow by all technicians. The Thermo is the only unit that possess a paraffin block trim area. A paraffin block trimmer is usually an additional separate equipment purchase; thus, offering an extra cost savings.
