- Description
- The Center for Nanoscale Science (CNST) and NIST has a requirement for an Ultra-high vacuum (UHV) Radial Distribution System. The Radial Distribution System will be a central hub for samples and probes, and will used to move samples and probes among various UHV vacuum chambers connected to the Radial Distribution System in a scanning tunneling microscopy system in CNST. This system will be used by NIST researchers to transfer samples and probes among multiple vacuum systems in the scanning tunneling microscopy lab in C016/218. The radial distribution system (RDS) is a vacuum chamber with a 2-axis rotating telescoping arm that can rotate to multiple radial ports on the chamber, and then extend through the port into the adjoining vacuum chamber, allowing one to transfer samples and probes attached to the transfer arm from one chamber to the another one, while keeping the sample and probes under vacuum and not exposing them to atmospheric contamination. Minimum Requirements All items must be new. Prototypes, demonstration models, used or refurbished instruments will not be considered for award. Line Item 0001: One (1) Radial Distribution System (RDS) or equivalent, which shall meet or exceed the specifications identified below. A.The RDS shall contain a Radial Distribution Chamber with the following specifications 1.The chamber shall be ultra-high vacuum compatible and bakeable to 150 C, achieving pressures in the 1E-11 Torr range. The chamber shall have a mechanical polished interior finish. 2.The chamber shall have (8) radial 6 inch OD (DN 100 CF) conflat (CF) fixed ports, equally spaced with tapped UNF threads. 3.The chamber shall have (8) 4.5 inch OD (DN 63 CF) vertically facing fixed ports at the same radial angles as item A.2, to view the transfer rod when it is facing a radial port. The flanges shall be fixed and tapped with UNF threads. 4.The chamber shall have a top 10 inch OD (DN 200 CF) port for the radial transfer mechanism in B. 5.The chamber shall have one bottom 8 inch OD (DN 200 CF) port facing down on the central axis, fixed and tapped with UNF threads. 6.The chamber shall have (3) 2.75 inch OD (DN 40 CF) ports on the bottom surface facing down, fixed and tapped with UNF threads. 7.The chamber shall have one 6 inch OD (DN 100 CF) on the bottom surface, fixed and tapped with UNF threads. 8.The main chamber OD shall be 21.65 inches (550 mm) and the flange to flange distance along a diameter between the faces of the 6 inch OD (DN 100 CF) ports shall be 24.41 inches (620 mm). 9.The top to bottom flange distance shall be 13.98 inches (355 mm). 10.The chamber shall have four adjustable height legs attached to the bottom of the chamber with a height of 23.46 inches (596 mm) from the chamber center to bottom of legs. 11.The chamber shall have two lift hooks on the top with 1.5 inch ID (38 mm). B.The RDS shall contain a radial telescoping transfer arm with the following specifications 1.The radial transfer arm shall have a 2-axis capability of rotating to all radial ports (axis 1), and extending along the radial direction (axis 2) into an adjoining connected vacuum chamber. 2.The transfer arm shall be capable of extending a sample platter, of 77 mm diameter, at a position of 546 mm from the flange face of the 6 inch OD (DN 100 CF) radial flange to center of 77 mm platter; total radial arm extension measured from the radial flange face to the furthest end of the transfer arm with platter, shall be 23.01 inches (585 mm). 3.The sample platter at the end of the transfer arm shall have (4) slots to accommodate (4) flat plate style sample holders of dimension 0.89 inches (22.57 mm) x 0.59 inches (15 mm) x 0.039 inches (1 mm) designed for NIST style sample holders. 4.The sample platter at the end of the transfer arm shall have the ability to rotate among the four positions and lock to position one of the four sample holders facing along the radial direction. C.The RDS shall have an automatic electric control system with the following specifications 1.The control system shall have a hand-held control panel to command the transfer arm to rotate to any one of the eight 6 inch OD (DN 100 CF) radial ports. The hand-held control panel shall have a command to extend the radial transfer arm through the port into an adjoining chamber and allow it to stop at any radial position. 2.The control system shall have hand-held control capability to open and close pneumatic valves which are bolted to the radial ports. 3.The control system shall have an interlock that allows electrical connection to the position indicators on the pneumatic gate valves connected to the radial ports so that the transfer arm will not extend if the gate valve is closed. 4.The control system shall have an interlock consisting of hard wired limit switches on (4) of the radial ports (90 degrees apart) inside the radial distribution chamber to prevent the gate valves closing if the transfer arm is extended. 5.The control system shall be powered by 110 V AC, 60 Hz power. Installation The system shall be installed by NIST staff. NIST is seeking responses from all responsible sources, including large, foreign, and small businesses. Small businesses are defined under the associated NAICS code for this effort, 334516, as those domestic sources having 1,000 employees or less. Please include your company's size classification and socio-economic status in any response to this notice. Companies are requested to email a detailed report describing their abilities to forest.crumpler@nist.gov no later than the response date for this Sources Sought Notice. The report should include achievable specifications and any other information relevant to your product or capabilities.
