Description
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention intends to award a sole source firm fixed price purchase order to BioTek for a MultiFlo FX washer/dispenser (2X). Viral Special Pathogens Branch (VSPB) conducts research on highly-pathogenic viruses. Part of the ongoing work at the branch involves assessing neutralization of such viruses by patient samples, samples from animal experiments, as well as antibody preparations. The chosen system would ideally be modular so that additional reagents and plate formats (in addition to the current 96-wells) could be incorporated. This way, the same platform can be utilized for other assays meeting our current CLIA and safety standards. The safety requirement for handling viruses under biological safety cabinets sets limits to the physical dimensions of the washer/dispenser. Depth of the instrument footprint is most critical, and should be kept as small as possible. Height of the instrument is also a consideration, while the width of our current BSCs is necessary. In practice, such work is done in two steps: cells and antibody preparations can be prepared at biosafety level (BSL)-2 conditions, and the actual assays that involve the use of infectious virus will be done at BSL-4 conditions. Here, purchase of two identical cell washing/dispensing systems, one for BSL-2 and one for BSL-4, is sought. Since the assays utilize live cells that are sensitive to drying, combo systems that are able to both a) gently wash adherent cells, and b) dispense medium. After considering several options (see below). The MultiFlo FX has the capability to process all commonly used microplate formats (from 6-wells to 1536-wells), and its modular design enables upgrading the system for further protocols that require the use of a larger number of reagents. The system also has a favorable physical footprint for work inside BSCs (17.2" X 12" x 8" WxDxH), and it is compatible with current instrumentation at the branch (BioTek BioStack, Cytation instruments). NOTE: THIS NOTICE WAS NOT POSTED TO FEDBIZOPPS ON THE DATE INDICATED IN THE NOTICE ITSELF (28-MAR-2019); HOWEVER, IT DID APPEAR IN THE FEDBIZOPPS FTP FEED ON THIS DATE.
