Description

Please see attached document for complete description and terms. Background Nutrient Analysis Branch (NAB) of Southeast Food and Feed Laboratory (SFFL) in Atlanta, GA requires acquisition of a Combustion module - Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy (CM-CRDS) system for the 13C/12C ratio of solid/semisolid samples. Stable carbon isotope ratio analysis (SCIRA) is becoming a more important analysis technique for the FDA as it has been demonstrated as a powerful tool to detect economic adulteration, especially in the analysis for the honey adulteration. NAB is the sole servicing field lab for the honey analysis, however the sample had to be sent to other FDA lab (FCC) for the carbon-SIRA, or other private laboratories had to be utilized. It is projected to see an increase in the number of samples needing SCIRA in the future. The proposed instrument is an economical alternative over the more expensive isotope ratio mass spectrometer (IR-MS), which requires higher maintenance cost.
