Description
The Combat Capabilities Development Command Ground Vehicle System Center (CCDC GVSC) is planning to demonstrate a lightweight electrified combat vehicle in fiscal year 2025. One variant of the electrified platform will be powered by a hydrogen fuel cell system. Preliminary analysis of vehicle performance has shown that light and medium duty combat vehicles will require a hydrogen fuel cell system capable of producing 400 kWe net power output. The hydrogen fuel cell should be a high technology readiness level (TRL) system that will operate on compressed hydrogen gas. The fuel cell architecture can incorporate a multi-stack arrangement to meet the required net power output of 400 kWe but should include a gross power capable of handling all balance of plant, thermal management, and other internal parasitic loads required to operate the fuel cell system. The hydrogen fuel cell system, to include all balance of plant components, should maintain a low noise signature of less than 60 dBa. The fuel cell stacks and balance of plant will reside in an engine compartment that has an available volume of 85 cubic-feet. Thermal management components are not required to fit within engine compartment space claim and can be placed elsewhere on the vehicle to maximize air flow. In order to plan and proceed with a demonstration, CCDC GVSC has the need to understand the commercial maturity, availability, and rough cost of fuel cell systems at this power output size for utilization on combat vehicles.
