Description

NOTICE OF INTENT TO AWARD A SOLE SOURCE CONTRACT. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) intends to negotiate a contract on a sole source basis with Covaris, Inc., Woburn, MA. The purpose of the contract is for the contractor to upgrade the existing Covaris S2 Sonicator to a newer model, the Covaris S220 Focused Ultra-Sonicator. Covaris no longer services the S2 model. The S220 system is new and under patent so there are no refurbished or generic models available. Covaris specializes in equipment and techniques that blend acoustic physics, mechanical engineering, and biology in order to solve a multitude of scientific problems. It is the only company in the market that uses the AFA technique to process samples, thus allowing for the delicate shearing of DNA samples required for NGS sample preparation. As part of the transaction, Covaris is offering a trade-in on the current S2 model. A trade-in of the old model would provide a discount on the new equipment and environmentally friendly disposal of the new equipment. Market research indicates that there are no other vendors who supply the Covaris S220 Focused Ultra-Sonicator since this uses a process patented by Covaris, the manufacturer. The S220 is available through the manufacturer only.
