Description
The U.S Naval Medical Research Unit No. 6 (NAMRU-6) in Lima, Peru is searching for sources in the field of research on tropical infectious diseases, for a surveillance study of malaria and in regions located in the Norte de Santander State in Colombia (South America). This study is funded by The Armed Forces Health Surveillance Center, Division of Global Emerging Infections Surveillance and Response System Operations (AFHSC-GEIS) and aims to study the distribution of malaria in endemic regions and assess changes in prevalence of drug resistance. This acquisition requires the institution to carry out coordination, obtainment of study authorization from local health facilities and local IRB approval to perform the study in Brazil; recruitment and training of personnel for performing the study; collect epidemiological data and biological samples; label and keep samples in adequate conditions for preservation; and perform molecular biology activities including but not limited to DNA extraction, PCR and sequencing. The contract will have a performance period of 1 year with optional extension period for two additional years. It is the intent of NAMRU-6 to award this requirement to Kansas State University (KSU) USA. KSU is among the best 1000 universities in the world with a long-standing line of research in arthropod borne diseases. KSU is the only institution able to meet our research needs in Colombia with active research in arthropod borne diseases such as Zika, Dengue and Malaria Norte de Santander. Furthermore, KSU is conducting collaborative work with NAMRU-6 during the current year showing high professional standards, generating high quality research, and accrued the necessary level of experience to successfully run the multiple activities that comprise the study.
