Description
This is a Sole Source announcement for Amargosa Vole Surveys. All responsible sources may submit a capability statement, proposal, or quotation, which shall be considered by the agency. See below for additional details. SCOPE: The objective of this work is the documentation of vole use of habitat that is at the margin of what has been reported to be within their niche and that is recovering from earlier impacts such as fire. This will include: -- habitat monitoring -- live-trapping, marking, releasing, and monitoring of voles, and -- statistical and GIS-facilitated analysis to document vole use of this habitat. TASKS Task 1: Determine outcome of natural fire in marsh. Voles and habitat will be monitored near Tecopa marshes 17 and 21 which are recovering from severe local fire. Measurements will be taken of bulrush stem density and the depth of the litter level. Sign surveys will be performed within the marsh footprint and along the hillside above to detect vole activity. Remotely-triggered cameras will be placed on the hillside to evaluate for vole use of this marginal habitat. If any burrows are detected, an endoscope will be used to explore the burrow for vole activity. Data will be compiled on a map and analyzed with summary statistics. The summary will inform how much to expect fire to diminish vole ¿s ability to use a marsh and how long after the fire a period of unuseability may be expected. Task 2: Determine whether Amargosa voles will use habitat previously thought not to be suitable including areas lacking standing water or not in bulrush-dominated habitat. Monitoring will consist of live-trapping, camera-trapping, deployment of a PIT-tag reader, and endoscopic assessment of possible vole burrows in soil near marsh peripheries. Live trapping will be done over three-four day pulses along preset transects in marshes 8 and 9 with marking of individual voles to allow for repeated surveys and mark-recapture demographic statistical calculations. Cameras will be set at egress points from marshes to detect voles moving among marshes and near possible burrows that voles may be occupying (based on presence of characteristic sign), particularly near southern Marshes 8 and 9. An endoscope will be introduced into burrow entrances to seek evidence of vole use of non-marsh sites. Finally, if cameras and trapping suggest inter-marsh movement, we can PIT-tag individuals in nearby marshes and place the Biomark antenna between marshes: any tagged voles that cross the antenna are recorded. Together, collection and analysis of these data will allow us to understand how able voles are to persist in habitat previously thought to offer no value to the species. A better understanding of vole niche breadth is crucial for ongoing attempts to recover and downlist this species.
