Description

1. BACKGROUND: The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Salt Lake Technical Center (SLTC) provides necessary data on occupational exposure levels to hazardous chemicals. The SLTC uses a Hartmann 1.2 liter explosive dust test chamber, also called a Hartmann Bomb Apparatus as a test chamber for the testing of small quantity powders or dusts. It enables the comparison of the maximum pressure and maximum rate of pressure rise of different materials. The material or dust is suspended in the air of the test chamber, an electrical arc is created inside the test chamber and the material ignites and explodes. The pressure wave of the explosion is recorded and the maximum pressure and the rate at which the pressure reaches that maximum are calculated. The instrument is used to determine if the dust is a hazard to workers according to the OSHA regulations.
