- Description
- This notice is posted pursuant to FAR 5.301 and FAR 8.405-6. This requirement renews maintenance and support for its FY18-purchased SAP/NS2 (SAP National Security Services) Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise servers which house the core transaction processing and data store for NSF's mission applications, e.g. Fastlane, Meetings, eJacket, etc. Sybase is an industry leading enterprise database server that has been in use at NSF for 24 years running on Oracle Solaris operating system and Oracle SPARC hardware (SPARC/Solaris platform). NSF relies on Sybase databases to store the large volumes of business and financial data that is collected and processed by the agency's mission critical business and financial systems. The complexity of the connections between the databases and business systems have resulted in unique and highly specialized environment. Because the data residing in the databases is central to NSF's information processing and is shared and accessed by multiple systems, the database components were designed and implemented in tightly integrated fashion along with the applications and hardware components. Deploying the systems to operate with the databases in this manner required extensive configuration in order to enable the components to communicate with one another. In many cases, the connections between databases and systems required the creation of custom code, with parameters specific to the Sybase database environment, in order to share data between them. Thus, an alternate database product could not be introduced to the environment without extensive work to replicate the existing data, move it to a new platform and rewrite the code which enables connectivity between the database and NSF's systems.
