Description
Background Information:Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) has developed a hybrid, wide-range amplifier that has two outputs, simultaneously providing a low-noise, high-gain output and a secondary linear low-gain output. This amplifier provides the dynamic range typically found in logarithmic amplifiers, with typical ratios of high-gain to low-gain of 200:1. This amplifier cancels the distortion caused by the non-linear action inside the circuit (U1), making the outputs linear and suitable for further processing or data-logging with two A to D converters. No outside switching is required and the circuit can be designed such that both high and low-gain outputs are linear up to the op-amp supply voltages (assuming R-R op-amps). Additionally, some photodiode applications require background current subtraction, and we have developed low-noise adjustable bandwidth circuits that can be applied easily to this amplifier as the application demands.Opportunity Description:SNL is seeking partners to commercialize the technology described in:US #7,825,735 “Hybrid Wide Range Detector Amplifier”US #10,090,826 “Supply-Noise Rejecting Current Source”Many applications require processing both very small and very large signals. A high-gain, transimpedance amplifier (TIA) provides low-noise but is easily swamped by large signals, especially with low-voltage designs. Logarithmic amplifiers provide a wide range dynamic range by sacrificing waveform fidelity. Auto-ranging circuits lose data when switching between low and high gain and require amplitude sensing and switching circuits.Potential Applications: Photodetectors Optical power meters Fiber alignment Characterizing laser dynamics (threshold, pre/post pulse) High dynamic range, high-speed current sensingKeywords: Amplifier, photodiode, photodetectorSandia National Laboratories is a multimission laboratory managed and operated by National Technology & Engineering Solutions of Sandia, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Honeywell International Inc., for the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration under contract DE-NA0003525.
