- Advanced Photon Source Upgrade Project Mechanical Removal Vendor Information Day The Advanced Photon Source Upgrade (APS-U) Project is an $815M project funded by the Department of Energy�s Office of Science that will upgrade Argonne National Laboratory�s Advanced Photon Source (APS) in order to provide world leading, high brightness hard x-rays to the x-ray science community. The Removal and Installation (R&I) Group is pleased to announce that it will host a Mechanical Removal Vendor Information Day on January 15, 2020. The mechanical removal stage of this project will extract the 1.1 kilometer circumference storage ring from the APS accelerator tunnel. The storage ring is made up of 200 steel girders that support the 1080 steel magnets and electron beam transport chambers. This project will remove this 3.75 million pounds of components within a two month period! APS-U is looking for a collaborative partner that can provide innovative solutions (people and tools) for this effort. This information day is designed to give potential vendors an opportunity to learn the details of the work involved in the mechanical removal. The APS-U team will give an overview of the project, details about the components being removed, and information on what it takes to work at Argonne National Laboratory. Interested companies will be given an opportunity to give a brief presentation on their capabilities and relevant experience.
