The fluorescent penetrant inspection (FPI) unit is a type Non Destructive Testing (NDT) equipment used to inspect parts for flaws. The FPI unit can be utilized on a wide variety of non-porous materials sustained by the Air Force. FPI works through the application of a dye, which fluoresces (emits light) when exposed to Ultraviolet A (UV-A) light, and indicates when there is a flaw in a part. The dye collects in cracks or other flawed areas on the surface of the partbeing inspected. Since the dye concentrates in the flawed area, the flawed area glows brighter when exposed to ultraviolet light giving an indication of the nature of the flaw. Personnel inspecting the part can determine the type and nature of the flaw. FPI is used to inspect both new parts prior to acceptance, and parts that have been repaired in a wide variety of industries. The USAFs requirement is identified by Product Description PD-AFLCMC-EZPT-03-19. Four different version of a FPI unit will be contracted for. Size 5 will be form the majority of this buy. USAF is looking to set up a 5 year requirements contract. Total Best Estimated Quantity for each year is 24 EA. It is anticipated that the RFP will be released on or around 9 March 2020.
