- Description
- The USAID/South Africa Health Office manages one of the largest Presidents Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) programs in the world. USAID supports the Government of South Africa in its fight against HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis (TB). USAID focuses resources in geographic areas of the country with the highest burden of HIV and TB and implements a strategic portfolio specifically aimed at epidemic control. To reach HIV epidemic control, USAID supports clinical and community-based health and social services in the following program areas: HIV Prevention Services Care and Treatment for those living with HIV Orphans & Vulnerable Children: support and referrals for community resources Tuberculosis detection, treatment and reporting Health Systems Strengthening: supply chain, health financing and building human resource capacity Nutrition: assessment, maternal and infant care, counseling and training Gender-related services: support for victims of gender-based violence and sexual and reproductive health services for adolescent girls and young women Health Office staff are active participants in PEPFAR policy and program design, and often chair interagency technical working groups on a range of health-related issues. In this third, five-year phase of the program, PEPFAR/South Africa is oriented toward strategic partnership with all levels of the South African Government (SAG), with an emphasis on epidemic control, DREAMS, health systems strengthening, and cost efficiencies. The Partnership Framework embodies this new strategic direction and emphasizes the alignment of PEPFAR/SA and SAG information and reporting systems. Enhancing the availability, quality, and use of Strategic Information (SI) for both PEPFAR/SA and the SAG are fundamental to achieving success in these areas. The South Africa PEPFAR program continues to account for approximately one-quarter of all PEPFAR results globally; in this context the Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E)/SI Advisor plays a critical, cross-cutting role that affects not only the direction and progress of PEPFAR/South Africa, but also of the global program.
