Description
The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is publishing notice of its intent to sole source to Klaus Mueller. Interested parties who are able to provide the services noted below should respond by describing their capabilities prior to the deadline to cguy@ushmm.org . Please note this is not a solicitation.� The contractor coordinates archival and artifact acquisitions projects in Germany, the Netherlands, and Italy, as well as provide research and guidance to USHMM in its scholarly and international activities in Germany, the Netherlands and Italy. This will include maintaining working relationships with the representatives of archives, museums, research institutes, cultural and other institutions; researching and locating repositories of relevant Holocaust materials to be surveyed and digitized; and assisting USHMM in negotiating archival reproduction agreements with said repositories and affiliated institutions. The contractor shall conduct or supervise surveys of the collections for relevant Holocaust material; translate surveys and finding aids into English; coordinate and arrange for the microfilming or digitization of archival documents and record groups; as well as coordinate and arrange for the shipment of digitized archival materials, surveys and finding aids, and artifacts for the permanent and special exhibitions of USHMM.� The contractor will also work with European partners on core themes of Holocaust documentation and education, anti-Semitism and genocide prevention, which will include meeting with existing and/or potential Museum partner organizations; developing strategy and outreach plans with colleagues and potential Museum partners as related to exhibition and education projects in Europe; organizing and implementing joint scholarly, educational, or other programs and initiatives; and deepening and broadening the institutional impact of the Museum in Europe. The contractor is also expected to provide assistance to USHMM on international development trips, which will include preparing materials and background information; writing brochures; arranging for meetings with archival and government officials, as well as identifying specialists for tour activities and serving as a resource during the trips; scheduling and participating in travel with the USHMM Director to prepare for international development trips; attending events in Germany; and meeting with potential donors. The contractor will also participate in events at the Museum, attend and present their work at fundraising events in the United States; inform donors of Museum funding needs; present information and examples of his work to USHMM staff; answer donor requests for information; and coordinate with the Development Office staff regarding their work. � Qualifications Expertise in the history of the Holocaust, in particular in Germany and Western Europe Expertise networking with representatives of European archives, museums and other institutions Expertise networking in communities with Holocaust survivors and in working with Holocaust survivors on an individual basis Expertise of legal and ethical issues surrounding the acquisition of sensitive cultural heritage collections, and acquisitions representing trauma Deep understanding of museum collections management policies and collections plans, to ensure archival collections and objects acquired meet the strict parameters of the Museum�s collecting scope Ability to communicate the Museum�s collecting goals to owners who may not recognize artifacts that we wish to collect as culturally important Understanding of restricted fundraising and ability to liaise with potential donors At least 10 years experience identifying and acquiring archival collections and museum objects for history museums At least 10 years experience conducting provenance research and / or otherwise authenticating historical artifacts Fluency in German, and competency of at least one other European language
