- Description
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) intends to make an award to Knowinnovation for NSF Strategic Fire Initiative Lab services The NSF Division of Environmental Biology (DEB) has recently received increased interest in wildfire research from a broad spectrum of academic researchers and other federal agencies. To help DEB understand priorities in the area of wildfire and biological systems, a research roadmap is needed. Further, DEB would like to know about new avenues that might catalyze research and cooperation between the nations many sectors engaged in wildfire research. A convergent and strategic research approach is needed to understand how wildfires and living systems interact and to forecast these dynamics in a future world. In May 2021, NSF will hold a two-day workshop that will be facilitated through an expert external contractor (funding requested through this sole-source request) that will bring together diverse research communities to generate creative strategies and new research collaborations aimed at improving understanding and prediction of the causes and consequences of future fires. This workshop will develop a coordinated priority document describing the direction of this research area: The Strategic Fire Research Initiative Roadmap. Further, the workshop will lead to formation of interdisciplinary teams poised to advance scientific questions. The design of this workshop will borrow from the highly successful structure of facilitated workshops that have previously been used to develop new and novel solutions to challenging research problems such as Reintegrating Biology (https://reintegratingbiology.org) The period of performance will be: Base: January 11, 2021 July 10, 2021 The proposed contract action is for services for which the government intends to sponsor with only one source under the authority of FAR 13.106. This notice is not a request for competitive proposals. This synopsis is for information purpose only. NSF Strategic Fire Initiative Lab NSF has need for consulting and planning services as well as facilitation and management services for an upcoming highly interactive, team-building lab (conference) aimed at developing a research-based strategic fire initiative roadmap. The lab and all associated activities will be conducted entirely online. The lab is expected to occur over 2 days of about 5-6 hrs/day and will require significant planning of activities to enable participants to meet and interact with one another and develop preliminary ideas to be discussed at the conference. The aims are to enable individuals to see that they will benefit from collaboratively working together, and also to encourage all parties to work productively to enable consensus building and strategic development. The lab is expected to involve approximately 100 participants and will be arranged in small breakout sessions of approximately 10 participants as well as larger group activities. There will also be a significant number of tasks to complete after the lab is finished, and guidance is needed on this process as well. Services required are: 1 - Initial meeting with consultant to plan scope and goals of lab to include method of presentation, format, any pre-information needed from attendees, etc. (expected 2 meetings @ 1-3 hrs) 2 Expected weekly meetings with consultant to articulate lab goals, brainstorm meeting activities to meet our goals, and develop materials and activities to deliver those activities to meet our goals (expected 1 hrs x 30 meetings) 3 Contractor will be responsible for developing lab activities (with input from NSF) and preparing activities and all associated materials for review by NSF to include project website and maintaining collaborative shared folders. 4 Contractor may use their own presentation services or make use of NSF services (NSF Zoom license, e.g.) to facilitate the lab 5 Contractor will professionally manage and facilitate the lab in an online format during the 2-day live event. 6 Contractor will coordinate follow-up activities including distribution of lab output materials and post-lab survey.
