Description
Many people in rural and underserved communities in developing countries face difficulties in gaining access to health care, education, economic opportunities, and basic social services because of distance and insufficient transportation options. Bicycles, however, can be a powerful, low-technology solution to this problem. Development organizations, including USAID, have used bicycles to achieve positive results in health care, agriculture, economic development, and education programs. Improving access to affordable bicycles creates a number of benefits, including improved gender norms, improved access to education, increased productivity and income, and increased time savings. For example, Institute for Transportation and Development Policy studies in Uganda, Tanzania, and Sri Lanka have shown that owning a bicycle can increase a familys income by as much as 35 percent. Development programs that have incorporated bicycles have demonstrated the importance of focusing on the entire bicycle ecosystem to sustain and scale the positive impacts of these toolslessons that should be guiding principles for future investments.
