Description
Page 2 of 2 36C24221Q0552 SPECIAL NOTICE NOTICE OF INTEND TO SOLE SOURCE MALDI BIOTYPER SIRIUS ONE BUFFALO VAMC The Department of Veterans Affairs, Network Contracting Office NC02 in conjunction with the Buffalo VA Medical Center, 3495 Bailey Avenue, Buffalo, NY 14215, intends to solicit and negotiate with only one source under the authority of FAR 6.302-1(a)(2), Only one responsible source and no other supplies or services will satisfy agency requirements. The NAICS code is 334516 with a small business size standard of 1,000 employees. The VA intends to solicit and negotiate with Government Scientific, 12351 Sunrise Valley Drive, Reston, Virginia 20191 for Maldi-Biotyper Sirius One equipment. This contract will be a Firm Fixed Price sole source. The Maldi-Biotyper Sirius one equipment is a matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization -time of flight (Maldi-TOF) mass spectrophotometry for the identification of bacteria and yeast. Identification of microorganisms in a Clinical Microbiology Laboratory provides definitive knowledge regarding the cause of infection and plays an important role in patient management and choice of antimicrobial therapy. Traditionally, the identification of bacteria in clinical laboratories has relied on time consuming phenotypic methods such as growth on selective and non-selective media (>48 hours), morphology of colonies, Gram Stain and biochemical reactions, using multiple automated and/or manual testing methods. These methods are laborious, time consuming and require a relatively long turn- around time. In addition, unusual and difficult to identify organisms encountered in the clinical laboratory may need to be sent to a reference lab for final identification often using DNA sequencing. This process could add an additional two weeks before the organism is identified. Thereby delaying appropriate and effective antibiotic therapy. The MALDI -TOF technology allows for these difficult organisms to be identified within 30 minutes from colonies isolated on agar plates. The use of matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization -time of flight (Maldi-TOF) mass spectrophotometry has emerged as a revolutionary paradigm shifting change in the improvement of patient care with accurate, cost effective, rapid identification of pathogenic microbes leading to appropriate antimicrobial therapy. Other persons may identify their interest by responding to this requirement by Friday, March 5, 2021 at 2 pm EST. Such capabilities information will be used solely for the purpose of determining whether or not to conduct this procurement on a competitive basis.  All information shall be furnished at no cost or obligation to the Government.  A determination by the Government not to open the requirement to competition based upon responses to this notice is solely within the discretion of the Government. No solicitation is available at this time. All inquiries must be submitted by email to Idalia Algarin at Idalia.algarin@va.gov.
