Description

The Waste Treatment Plant (WTP) Low Activity Waste (LAW) Vitrification Facility combines hazardous low-level liquid wastes with glass formers in a high temperature melter to create a stable waste form suitable for shallow land disposal. During cold (e.g., non-radioactive) startup, testing and readiness assessment (collectively referred to as cold commissioning) of the LAW Facility, nominally 400-700 stainless steel containers holding non-radioactive glass will be produced over a period of time spanning roughly 14-15 months. The waste will include non-radiological hazardous Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA)/Washington State Dangerous, and non-regulated waste. As many as 700 and as few as 400 stainless steel containers filled with non-radioactive, borosilicate glass will be produced during cold commissioning testing this waste will be disposed of at an acceptable offsite landfill. Of the 700 stainless steel containers, up to 300 will be hazardous waste (RCRA codes U37 and U165) and up to 400 will be non-hazardous.
