- Description
- The Airport Surface Detection Equipment Model 3 (ASDE-3) Surface Movement Radar (SMR), are approaching their end-of-life and have obsolescenceand supportability issues. In addition, these sensors have high operating and maintenance costs that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is looking to reduce. The ASDE-3s are located at airports equipped with Airport Surface Surveillance Capability (ASSC) and Airport Surface Detection Equipment - Model X (ASDE-X). The ASSC and ASDE-X systems fuse multiple sensor data (including the SMR) With ASSC/ASDE-X, controllers see aircraft and ground vehicles on the airport surface and on approach and departure paths within a few miles of the airport. The system correlates flight-plan information with position displays, providing surveillance data with an accuracy and update rate suitable for: Situational awareness in all weather conditions; Departure queuing; Conflict detection and alerts; and Taxi route conformance monitoring The FAA is investigating current Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) products that could provide an innovative SMR solution to replace thirty-four (34) aging radar sub-systems sensors that are currently deployed in the National Airspace System, distributed across eighteen (18) ASDE-X airports, nine (9) ASSC airports, and three (3) support facilities. Some sites have more than one SMR. The FAA is deploying and maintaining surface surveillance systems that utilize multiple sensors. This market survey only addresses the SMR sensor subsystem for these systems.A new SMR sensor replacement will require integration with the existing surface surveillance systems, ASDE-X and ASSC.
