- Description
- Page 1 of 1 The Department of Veterans Affairs, James J. Peters VA Medical Center, intends to negotiate on a sole source basis, pursuant to FAR 6.302-1, with the New Jersey Institute of Technology for research support for VA research titled, Identification of New Biomarkers for Determining Risk of Lower Extremity Fracture during Exoskeleton-assisted Ambulation: Developing a Personal Rehabilitation Approach to Optimize Function after SCI . This is a multidisciplinary collaboration between the JJP VAMC and NJIT who will be providing motion analyses and FE modeling in support of the VA research. The goal of this research initiative is to develop new evidence-based biomarkers to identify persons with spinal cord injury (SCI) at highest risk of long-bone and/or calcaneus fractures when participating in rehabilitation activities, such as exoskeleton-assisted walking (EAW). Persons with SCI who participate in EAW have large forces brought to bear on the feet and legs due to upright activity in a robotic device. Because of the marked bone loss below the level of lesion after SCI, such weight-bearing activities greatly increase the risk of fracture. The ability to predict which persons are at highest risk for fracture during EAW will allow evidence-based methods to minimize the occurrence of fractures and associated morbidity, as well as prevent avoidable medical costs. This is a notice of intent is not a request for competitive proposals; however, any responsible source who believes it is capable of meeting the requirement may submit a capability statement to the contracting office no later than July 8th, 12PM, EST. Interest/capability statements may be sent to Lynn Portman at lynn.portman@va.gov. No telephone responses will be accepted. A determination not to compete the proposed requirement based upon the responses to this notice is solely within the discretion of the Government.
