- Description
- As part of its Congressionally-mandated feasibility assessment for a U.S. mesothelioma patient registry, the Respiratory Health Division of NIOSH seeks a partner at a mesothelioma treatment center to test methods for electronic collection of structured and standardized occupational information from mesothelioma patients, which would support accurate and efficient reporting and facilitate research on occupational risk factors. NIOSH has devised a modular framework for structuring, standardizing, and collecting information about a patients work, in the context of their health information; this framework is called Occupational Data for Health (ODH). ODH is designed to facilitate selection of standardized entries by providing recognizable terms to the patient or patient representative for most data elements, including industry and occupation. These standardized terms can be used for clinical decision support, to identify populations for focused analysis, and to support public health surveillance and investigations. Incorporating electronic collection of ODH from mesothelioma patients into the feasibility assessment will help establish the data structure in alignment with anticipated future use of ODH in electronic health records (EHR) and with data collected in cancer registry systems. In 2019, NIOSH competitively awarded a contract to the Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine at the University of Maryland (UMD) to develop a mesothelioma patient questionnaire and a clinical data collection tool for gathering information from providers and medical records. The contract also specified pilot testing the questionnaire with mesothelioma patients. UMDs pilot project is currently on schedule for successful completion in August 2021 and this proposed contract would represent a logical follow-up to their current work and would advance NIOSHs efforts to assess the feasibility of a future mesothelioma registry. UMD has experience using REDCap, a secure web application for building and managing questionnaires, and would need to make minor modifications to their existing questionnaire to initiate this follow-up contract. In addition, epidemiologists and physicians at UMD are highly specialized and experienced in occupational respiratory disease including malignant mesothelioma. Although malignant mesothelioma is a relatively rare condition, the mesothelioma treatment center at UMD sees a high volume of cases with referrals from around the mid-Atlantic region, which increases the likelihood that this center will be able to meet patient recruitment goals. ?This is not a request for competitive quotations .Any quotation/response should be emailed to contract specialist at MSo9@cdc.gov by COB 12Aug 2021
