Description
The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), Directed Energy Directorate (RD), High-Powered Electromagnetics Division (RDH), located at Kirtland AFB, is the Air Forces Center of Excellence for research in High-Powered Electro-Magnetic (HPEM) technology and functions as the Air Force Material Commands center for HPEM technology development, acquisition, transformation, and support. AFRL/RDH is composed of highly specialized research facilities and HPEM scientists and engineers that work in close partnership with the Air Force (AF), Department of Defense (DoD), and industry to provide innovative technologies. Effects The mission of the High Power Electromagnetics (HPEM) Effects Program is to characterize the effectiveness of potential HPEM weapons systems by developing and running effectiveness tools, and generating vulnerability data to feed those tools. The vulnerability data consists of Probability of Effect (Pe) curves for electronic systems when subjected to an HPEM waveform that results in disruption to or failure of normal operation of the systems. In addition, the HPEM Effects Program investigates the fundamental mechanisms resulting in these disruptions or failures, in order to predict and model the effects. Numerical Simulations The mission of the High Power Electromagnetics (HPEM) Numerical Simulations Program is to develop, improve, and utilize the world-class simulation tools within RDH, which enable the effective development of modern HPEM systems.
