Description
The purpose of this contract is to furnish all labor, supervision, equipment, transportation, materials, supplies and incidentals to perform deferred trail maintenance within Hells Canyon Wilderness of Idaho, within Hells Canyon National Recreation Area. The trail to be maintained under this individual BPA Call order is the Sheep Creek Trail #53, located in the Seven Devils Mountains, Hells Canyon Wilderness, Hells Canyon Nationial Recreation area of Idaho. The trail is accessed through Windy Saddle Trailhead located 17 miles southwest of Riggins, Idaho via Forest Road 517. The lowest elevations of this trail may also be accessed by Jetboat on the Snake River or by foot on the Snake River National Recreation Trail 102. Sheep Creek is located 16 miles by trail from Upper Pittsburg Landing. Deferred trail maintenance shall include clearing of downed and leaning trees, cleaning existing drainage structures (waterbars, turnpikes, culverts, ditches, etc.)and clearing rocks and woody debris from trail beds, small slide repair and trail tread sluff, stream ford maintenance, and brushing of woody type vegetation. The work to be performed under this call order is difficult. The terrain is rugged and steep. The area has burned several times in the last 30 years. There are areas of heavy downfall and thick brush. Sheep Creek Trail #53 has not been maintained properly and to standard for many years. The terrain is steep and rugged and is very brushy in the riparian areas. The drainage has been burned several times in the last 30 years. The ecoystem of this drainage is goes from Alspine to Semi Arid Desert. Tree species range from Whitebark Pine, Sub Alpine fir, Lodgepole pine, Spruce, Ponderosa Pine, Couglas fir, and Pacific Yew, Hawthorn, and Hackberry. Brush species include but are not limited to: Huckleberry, Ninebark, Ocean Spray, Red Osier Dogwood, Vine Maple, Rose,and Elderberry. The trail also traverses areas of open grassy hillsides. Poison Ivy and Burdock are present in the lower elevations. There are approximately twelve stream fords in which six have higher flows, six minor. Camping opportunities with stock are limited.
