Description
The purpose of this requirement is for a Phase I feasibility study to study the behavioral responses of large whales to low frequency (LF) sound in support of Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) Engineering and Expeditionary Warfare Center (EXWC), Environmental, Living Marine Resources (LMR) Program. The research projects objectives are the creation/populationof the Marine Mammal Monitoring (M3) Program'smarine mammal behavioral database, to develop a behavioral niche to establish measures of behavioral responses in ocean areas that exhibit low to high vessel activity levels, to study the feasibility and advantages to conducting an acoustic behavioral response study (BRS) using M3 to monitor the acoustic environment in the presence of low frequency active (LFA) sonar transmissions to collect and measure the behavioral responses of large whales to LFA sonar exposure, to develop and refine statistical analysis procedures to support the future evaluation of marine mammal behavioral responses to LFA sound and update the behavioral responses function for LFA sonar, prepare a Phase I summary report that documents the results of the acoustic BRS feasibility study and all tasks undertaken during the performance of this contract, and to prepare a draft scientific manuscript suitable for publication in a peer-reviewed scientific journal that details the results of the statistical analysis of large whale behaviors in response to an anthropogenic sources transmissions. The Period of Performance is from 28 October 2021 to 31 December 2022.
