NOAA Fisheries Alaska Fisheries Science Centers Auke Bay Laboratories Division has worked in collaboration with the Juneau School District for over 50 years to bring science education to Juneau students through Sea Week activities and Southeast Alaska Science Fair projects. More recently, efforts have been focused on increasing opportunities for Alaska Native students to take part in NOAA internships and programs. The Juneau Intern Project aims to create a framework to recruit and select Alaska Native students for internships at NOAA facilities in Juneau, and to foster partnership and understanding in NOAA staff through mentor training on Alaska Native cultural awareness and mentoring. The Juneau Intern Project is designed to address the underrepresentation of Alaska Native students in STEM fields and support the development of a diverse future workforce for NOAA Line Offices in the Alaska Region. The Alaska Fisheries Science Center will be partnering with staff from the NOAA Fisheries Alaska Regional Office, the National Weather Service Juneau Forecast Office, the Juneau School District, the Juneau STEM Coalition, and other Juneau organizations to pilot an internship program in the Juneau area for Alaska Native high school students. The Juneau Intern Project directly supports NOAAs education mission to educate and inspire the Nation to use science toward improving ocean and coastal stewardship, increasing safety and resilience to environmental hazards, and preparing a future workforce to support NOAAs mission. NOAAs role in science education is defined in the America COMPETES Act (P.L. 110-69), which provides broad authority for educational activities. The Act states: The Administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration shall conduct, develop, support, promote, and coordinate formal and informal educational activities at all levels to enhance public awareness and understanding of ocean, coastal, Great Lakes, and atmospheric science and stewardship by the general public and other coastal stakeholders, including underrepresented groups in ocean and atmospheric science and policy careers. In conducting those activities, the Administrator shall build upon the educational programs and activities of the agency. The purpose of this project is to provide logistical support for the student internship program by providing program development support, student support and mentor support/training, as specified in the tasks in the Statement of Work. The PLACE OF PERFORMANCE is Juneau, Alaska. The PERIOD OF PERFORMANCE is Date of Award until September 30, 2022, with an estimated award date in early December 2021.
