Description
MARKET SURVEY / SOURCES SOUGHT Hexavalent Barrel Chrome Replacement Document Type: Market Survey / Sources Sought Notice Response Date: 15 days from publication Classification Code: 10-Weapons Subject: Hexavalent Barrel Chrome Replacement THIS IS A MARKET SURVEY / SOURCES SOUGHT NOTICE ONLY: DESCRIPTION: The U.S. Army, Army Contracting Command-New Jersey at Picatinny Arsenal, NJ 07806-5000 is conducting a market survey / sources sought notice on behalf of the Project Manager Soldier Lethality (PMSL) for Hexavalent Barrel Chrome Replacement. Presently, hexavalent chromium plating is used as a protective bore coating to withstand corrosive environments and reduce wear in M4A1/M16 barrels. However, hexavalent chromium has been identified as a carcinogenetic and has been shown to cause acute and chronic toxicity to exposed personnel. Environmental concerns surrounding the use of hexavalent chromium in electroplating baths may eventually severely restrict, if not eliminate, use of this element. Based on these negative factors, there is a need for the development of coatings/plating for barrel bores which can perform/remain adhered under extreme temperatures, and which prevent chemical and mechanical assisted corrosion associated with small arms firing. Proposed coatings/plating shall be compatible chemically, thermally, and mechanically with a variety of materials, both traditional and novel, that may be used for barrels. Proposed coatings/plating materials and application processes shall be compatible with small caliber barrel bores as little as 5.56mm in diameter. Additionally, proposed coatings/plating shall prevent buildup/fouling of carbon as well as gilding metals that are commonly found in gas systems after extended firing. Further, application processes shall take into account the requirements of the coated/plated components in the small arms system. The application processes shall not adversely affect the substrate material in ways that may affect performance, including dimensional changes or effects on material properties, such as strength or fatigue life. Non-line of sight application is required to apply the coating or plating to the internal surfaces of the bore and signature suppressor. SUBMISSION INFORMATION: Interested companies who believe they are capable of providing hexavalent barrel chrome replacements are invited to indicate their interest by providing the Government a brief summary (i.e. no more than 10 pages -- not counting prior contract history) of their companys capabilities, facilities, personnel and past manufacturing experience. Include documentation on the proposed process for the chrome replacement and estimated or predicted properties of the proposed coating/plating, including but not limited to: coating thickness, coating hardness, adhesion to substrate, application limitations, including internal diameter limitations, line of sight or non-line of sight, application temperature, application time, etc. Include potential monthly production capabilities, and delivery lead times in your response. Companies are invited to indicate their capabilities by providing specifications, brochures, manuals, reports, demonstration video and other technical data as well as identification of current customers. A TECHNICAL DATA PACKAGE (TDP) WILL NOT BE PROVIDED IN SUPPORT OF THIS ANNOUNCEMENT. Please identify the subject of your response as, Hexavalent Barrel Chrome Replacement. Vendor Questionnaire: The purpose of this questionnaire is to obtain information from industry to assist in the market research.
